Opposition now at just 50%

When the Saint Index was first conducted in 2006 and Americans were asked how they would feel if a Walmart was proposed “in their community”, only 31 percent said they would support it.  Today, that number has risen 16 percentage points to 47 percent support.  Opposition to Walmart is now at just 50 percent across the U.S.

Saint Index Graph 2015

This is a substantial increase in support over the last ten years.  Most likely opponents to Walmart tend to be 18-34 years old with household incomes over $75,000. Women, suburbanites and New Englanders continue to be a hurdle for the big-box retailer.

Walmart’s most ardent supporters tend to be over 75 years old, household incomes under $25,000, rural or southern with educations of high school or less.
