kelo_2 Today is the third anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in the Kelo case, a ruling regarded by opponents as disastrous for individual property owners — to allow local governments to seize peoples’ homes and businesses for private economic development.

Blogger Judy Aron, in The Consent of the Governed blog, uses a ribbon cutting of the Kelo House, now moved to a new neighborhood in New London, to reflect on the decision’s consequences.

Many politicians and rights activists criticized the Kelo decision as a gross violation of property rights and as a misinterpretation of the Fifth Amendment, benefitting large corporations at the expense of individual homeowners and local communities.
