For a while, Vancouver, British Columbia, has been cited as a model for good planning and cutting edge approaches. In fact, the Urban Land Institute’s spring conference will be held there next year. So it is interesting to see the city struggling with a planning issue.
Like many cities led by progressive planners, Vancouver is seeking to build residential density to make mass transit more appealing and more successful. This means encouraging heavy development along the transit line, especially near the stations.
A new master plan being debated in Vancouver would allow residential buildings of up to 36 stories tall in neighborhoods that have never seen such height. But guess what? It’s not a real popular concept with some of those who live in those neighborhoods. This story gives an interesting glimpse into the world of city planners versus homeowners.
