NIMBY Wars, our book on the politics of land use, chronicles the belief that all planning is political, which has been borne out by The Saint Consulting Group’s experience in winning planning battles since 1983.

Other enlightened voices recognize that conflict is the rule, not the exception, in the planning process and that fear of the unknown underpins most opposition to development.

How developers can identify and counter the objections of NIMBYs, reduce delays and win wider public support is the focus of an interesting feature in the DJC (Daily Journal of Commerce) Oregon.

We would add that developers need to team up with land use experts with the people skills to go out and identify public concerns, create strategies and tactics to allay fears and reach out to rally and generate support in the community.
