slotsVoters approved a gambling ballot initiative that will bring up to 15,000 one-armed bandits, or slot machines, to Maryland by 2015, setting off a flurry of activity to buy land for a casino south of Baltimore and to establish a state gaming commission that will issue up to five lucrative slots licenses.

According to the Baltimore Sun, Governor Martin O’Malley and the Democratic leadership in Annapolis are counting on about $600 million in annual slots-related tax revenue to partly fix a structural deficit within three years. Billions of dollars are at stake for the potential bidders.
