A landfill tops the list of America’s most unwanted local development projects, the 2011 Saint Index survey found.
When it comes to their hometown, 76 percent of Americans said they would oppose a proposed landfill development. The next most-unwanted local project is a casino, with 74 percent opposed, followed by a quarry, with 54 percent opposed.
A landfill has been the most-opposed type of local development project in all six years of the Saint Index survey, which involves interviews with 1,000 adults annually to track American attitudes about development and the politics of land use.
Opposition to a local landfill project has declined over the past five years, however — from a high of 87 percent opposition in the 2006 Saint Index. Click here for SAINT INDEX 2011 LANDFILL RELEASE.
